Brainerd Area Coalition for Peace will host a presentation by peace activist Kathy Kelly 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Brainerd United Church of Christ Adult Forum Room, 415 Juniper St., Brainerd, near Gregory Park.

The Adult Forum Room is located in the upstairs section of the church.

Kelly is a longtime peace activist. She is a co-coordinator for Voices for Creative Nonviolence, a national peace group.

Kelly has traveled extensively to Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and South Korea. She organized more than 70 trips to Iraq between 1996 and 2003 to oppose U.S. sanctions on Iraq and deliver food and medicine to Iraqis. She stayed in Iraq at the beginning of the Iraq War in March 2003 to document the consequences of the war.

Kelly works with Afghan Peace Volunteers in Afghanistan, an organization trying to end the Afghan War and provide education and job training for young Afghans. She protested against the construction of the U.S.-South Korean naval base on Jeju Island.

Kelly will speak in several Minnesota communities, in addition to Brainerd, in late January/early February. Her presentations will focus on the effects of sanctions and war on Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen.

Kelly will discuss the possibility of a U.S. war against Iran due to heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Kelly's presentation will discuss how people living in the United States can oppose wars in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

There will be a question and answer session after Kelly's presentation.

Free will donations are welcome to support Voices for Creative Nonviolence's peace and justice work.

Kelly's presentation is a free event open to the public.
