Battles between the Myanmar junta forces and forces under the Karen National Union in the border trade hub of Myawaddy drove over 1,500 Myanmar nationals to flee Saturday to the Thai side of the border.

Mizzima reports that the refugees have been given temporary shelter at cargo gate No. 33 with the help of the Royal Thai Army.

The Thai army has increased security at the Mae Sot border as small weapons and heavy weapons fire can be heard from the Myawaddy side.

Pickup trucks could be seen bringing the refugees supplies including bottled water. Saturday saw temperatures rising to close to 40 degrees centigrade, typical for the hot season.
