A 27-year-old man from Fayetteville, Arkansas, pleaded guilty this week to a reduced felony count of possession of a controlled substance in Jasper County in which he had been charged with second-degree trafficking in drugs.

Cesar Sarmiento-Rosales changed his plea to guilty Tuesday in Jasper County Circuit Court in a plea deal capping the sentence he might receive at no more than five years.

Judge David Mouton delayed formal acceptance or rejection of the plea bargain and ordered the completion of a sentencing assessment of the defendant before a sentencing hearing July 8.

The conviction stems from a traffic stop March 4, 2022, conducted by Jasper police at an on-ramp to Interstate 49 for an alleged failure to use a turn signal. A consent search of the vehicle turned up a bag containing 2.5 ounces of cocaine, according to a probable-cause affidavit.
