La Réunion, Mauritius – Tropical Cyclone Fakir (GDACS, JTWC, Météo France La Réunion, Mauritius Met Service) (ECHO Daily Flash of 24 April 2018)

  • A new Tropical Cyclone named FAKIR formed on 23 April over the south-western Indian Ocean, north-northeast of Madagascar, and started moving towards La Réunion (France) and Mauritius.

  • FAKIR could pass near the eastern coast of La Réunion on 24 April in the morning (UTC) as an intense Tropical Storm, with maximum sustained winds of 100-110 km/h. It is then forecast to continue moving southeastward over the Indian Ocean, away from La Réunion and Mauritius, weakening.

  • Over the next 48 hours, heavy rains, strong winds, thunderstorms and storm surge could affect La Réunion and Mauritius. Météo France La Réunion has issued an alert for heavy rain, strong wind and high waves for most of the Island. The Mauritius Meteorological Services has issued a Cyclone Warning Class 2.
